India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Haze Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Alarming Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of Delhi showed an AQI above 500, which equals 10x the healthy limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times higher than healthy limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the hazardous smog that covers the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

Nevertheless recently, the recently formed regional administration petitioned the judicial authority to request a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Enforcement

Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities approved the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered air quality peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants originating in India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Near the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst levels ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from farm burning in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents living in the capital region is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

The pollution is projected to be causing 10,000 early mortalities per year in the capital.
