An Emotional Moment as Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"Liam Rosenior is a top tactician that knows the game intimately, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, as Chelsea's first African heritage player, it would be dishonest if I said this moment does not affect me."

These were the sentiments of Paul Canoville, the man who earned his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, to be their new head coach following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls the London club.

There have been a mere twelve black head coaches – not including those holding interim positions – in the Premier League since its inception 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and developed his game locally, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When kids see a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, someone they can identify with, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions equality… it is powerful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a massive moment for the club, for London, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Exactly Does the Data Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the Premier League's first black head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional present top flight boss of colour.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout English football is matched by an absence of diversity at executive level.

According to the BFP 2023's study, 43% of Premier League footballers are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, research from Kick It Out revealed just 3.2% of executive and leadership positions across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching positions, according to figures provided by eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

Across all coaching positions – including senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of his appointment as Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of talent that exists in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to persist in striving to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become one of only four permanent English managers currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's other big five leagues in terms of homegrown representation.

16 out of twenty top-flight managers in Serie A are Italian, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, 12 of the 18 in Germany while 10 of the 18 are French.

The present Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure every aspiring British coaches with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's really inspirational for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness an individual get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., played for the likes of West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint peaked with a five-month spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he received an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling discrimination in football and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He started writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence ability and said opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: how significant under-representation results in misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea this summer.

In further Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" to hear a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "blatant" racism.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a long-term contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the top flight's first African heritage boss with Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
